The Three Modalities
Tropical zodiac, Western astrology
Besides its element, every sign has a modality, sometimes called a quality. The modality describes how a sign uses its energy over time: whether it starts things, keeps them going, or adapts them. In Thai the modalities are called คุณะ.
Cardinal: Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn
Cardinal signs open each season, and they are the initiators. They like to begin, lead and set a direction. They can be excellent at starting, and sometimes less keen on finishing what they started.
Fixed: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius
Fixed signs sit in the middle of each season, when things are at their fullest. They are the sustainers. They bring persistence, loyalty and depth, but may resist change even when change would help.
Mutable: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces
Mutable signs close each season and prepare the shift to the next one. They are the adapters, flexible, versatile and good at adjusting plans. They may struggle to commit or to hold a single course.
The 4 x 3 grid
Picture a grid with four elements across and three modalities down. Every sign occupies exactly one square, and no two signs share the same combination. Aries, for instance, is cardinal fire, Taurus is fixed earth, Gemini is mutable air. That is why two signs of the same element can feel different: Leo and Aries are both fire, yet one holds steady and the other launches.
Reading your balance
Natalora's balance summary shows how many of your planets fall in each modality. Many cardinal planets suggest a pull toward action and initiative; many fixed planets suggest steadiness and stubbornness; many mutable planets suggest flexibility and restlessness. No pattern is better. It is just a pointer to the strengths you can use and the habits worth noticing.
