South Node: meaning in the natal chart
Tropical zodiac, Western astrology
South Node · เกตุ (South Node)
Key idea
The South Node is the point exactly opposite the North Node, where the Moon's path crosses the ecliptic heading south. Modern astrology reads it as what is already familiar: habits, talents and ways of coping that you carry and can rely on. Its sign and house show where those strengths sit. Thai astrology calls the point เกตุ. Remember this: the South Node is not a flaw or a debt. It is a home base that becomes limiting only when you never leave it.

Psychological meaning
In modern psychological astrology the South Node shows what comes easily because you have practised it for a long time, whether through family, culture or early experience. These are your defaults: ways of thinking, relating and solving problems that need no effort. They are real strengths, and other people often come to you for them.
The catch is that comfort has a ceiling. If you rely only on the South Node you may repeat a pattern long after it stops helping, such as always taking the same role in a group or always avoiding the same kind of conversation. Seen this way, the South Node is the place to start from and a resource to bring along, with the North Node as the next step. This reading is modern and symbolic. A useful question is which skill of yours feels so natural that you undervalue it, and where you could use it to support something new.
Strengths
- Skills that feel natural and that others can rely on.
- A stable base of habits to fall back on in a difficult time.
- Confidence in areas where you have long experience.
- Ability to teach or support others in what you know well.
Challenges
- Staying in a comfortable role long after it stops serving you.
- Repeating a familiar reaction without checking whether it fits.
- Undervaluing your own strengths because they come easily.
- Treating the South Node as a fault and trying to remove it.

How to read it in a chart
Find the South Node by sign for the style of your familiar strengths, and by house for the area of life where you feel most at ease. It is always exactly opposite the North Node, so read the two together: the South Node is where you start from, the North Node where you can stretch. The sign does not need your birth time, but the house does. The South Node follows the node type you choose, mean or true. It forms no aspects of its own in the usual sense: a planet conjunct the North Node is opposite the South Node, and the reverse. Planets conjunct the South Node show what you tend to rely on.
