Uranian astrology (Hamburg School)

Tropical zodiac, Uranian astrology (Hamburg School)

Uranian astrology is the way of reading a chart that comes from the Hamburg School, which began with the work of Alfred Witte of Hamburg, Germany, early in the twentieth century. It does not start from signs or houses but from the distances between the factors of a chart.

Its main tool is the 90° dial. The dial folds the zodiac in four, so factors 0°, 90° or 180° apart meet at the same place, and the whole family of 45° angles can be read at once.

At the heart of the method are midpoints, the points halfway between two factors. When a third factor stands on a midpoint, the three form a planetary picture. Besides the planets, the school uses the six personal points (the Sun, the Moon, the Node, the Ascendant, the Meridian and the Aries Point) and eight transneptunian points, hypothetical points of the school’s theory such as Cupido, Hades, Zeus and Kronos.

In the app, you turn the dial’s pointer on screen to read which factors are in contact, the midpoints page shows the midpoint of every pair in a chart, and the planetary pictures page shows the pictures a chart forms, each with a short reading. The readings describe themes to reflect on; they do not predict events.

The articles below are newly written from Witte’s own articles of 1913–1925, which are in the public domain. They read best in order, starting with the Hamburg School.
