What is astrology?

Tropical zodiac, Western astrology

Western astrology is a symbolic language. It links the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets at a given moment with themes of human experience: how we feel, relate, work and change. People have used it for thousands of years as a way to reflect on character and timing.

It helps to be clear about what it is not. Astrology is not a scientific proof of anything, and it does not hand you a fixed fate. No chart can tell you what will happen on a given day, and nothing here replaces medical, financial or legal advice. Think of it as a set of questions to ask yourself rather than a list of answers.

Older astrology books often carry warnings of ill health, sudden mishap and the end of life. Natalora leaves those warnings out on purpose: the app describes themes to explore, it does not forecast events.

The three building blocks

Almost everything in astrology is built from three ingredients:

  • Planets (including the Sun and Moon) describe what is acting: a drive, a need, a way of thinking.
  • Signs describe how it acts: boldly, patiently, curiously, tenderly.
  • Houses describe where in life it acts: home, work, relationships, learning.

A sentence such as "Venus in Libra in the 7th house" simply combines the three: how you love (Venus), in a balanced and social style (Libra), in the area of close partnerships (7th house).

Where the chart comes from

Your birth chart, also called a natal chart, is a map of the sky for the exact date, time and place you were born. The app calculates it on your device from your birth details. Once you have a chart, you can also look at how the sky is moving now and how it touches your own map. Those moving patterns are called transits.

How to use it well

Many people enjoy astrology as a mirror. A description either rings true or it does not, and both reactions are useful. Treat an interpretation as an invitation to notice patterns, not as a verdict. You are always free to act differently from what any chart suggests.

If you are new, a good path is to open the natal chart page, find your Sun, Moon and Ascendant, and then read the article on how to read a chart.

To see this in your own chart, cast it in the app from your date, time and place of birth.
