How to read a birth chart

Tropical zodiac, Western astrology

A birth chart can look like a puzzle at first: a circle full of symbols and lines. It becomes much easier once you know that it is just a map with a few layers. Read it one layer at a time and keep your first pass simple.

The wheel

The outer ring holds the twelve signs. Inside it are the twelve houses, which divide the sky as seen from your birthplace. Planet symbols sit around the circle at the positions they held at your birth, and lines across the middle connect planets that form aspects.

Start with the big three

  • Sun sign: your core identity and what you want to grow into.
  • Moon sign: your emotional nature and what makes you feel safe.
  • Ascendant (rising sign): the sign on the eastern horizon at birth, describing your style and how you meet the world. It needs an accurate birth time.

These three already give a rounded picture. Read them as a trio rather than separately; a fiery Sun with a quiet, careful Moon is a mix, not a contradiction.

Add the other planets

Next, look at where Mercury (thinking), Venus (love and values), Mars (drive), and the slower outer planets sit. For each one, ask three questions: which sign, which house, and which aspects does it make?

Look at aspects

An aspect is an angle between two planets. Some blend energies (conjunction), some flow easily (trine, sextile) and some create friction that pushes you to grow (square, opposition). Start with the tightest ones, those within a few degrees, because they tend to be felt most.

Look for balance

The balance of elements (fire, earth, air, water) and modalities (cardinal, fixed, mutable) shows what comes naturally and what you may need to cultivate. The natal chart page shows this summary in its Balance tab.

A practical routine

  1. Read the Sun, Moon and Ascendant.
  2. Note the house with the most planets; that area of life is busy.
  3. Read the tightest aspects.
  4. Return to the personality reading and see which lines resonate.

Do not try to absorb everything at once. A chart rewards patient, repeated looking.
