The Moon
Tropical zodiac, Western astrology
The Moon represents your inner emotional life: what makes you feel safe, how you respond when something touches you, and the habits that comfort you. If the Sun is who you are becoming, the Moon is where you come from and what you need in order to feel at home.
Cycle and speed
The Moon is the fastest body in the chart. It passes through all twelve signs in about 27 days, staying roughly two and a half days in each sign. It takes about 29.5 days to go from one new moon to the next. Because it moves so quickly, a chart without an exact birth time can leave the Moon sign uncertain, and the app marks it as approximate.
Rulership
The Moon rules Cancer, the sign of home, care and memory. It is exalted in Taurus, where its need for comfort meets steadiness. Its traditional weak points are Capricorn and Scorpio, where emotion tends to be held back or driven underground.
When it is strong
A settled Moon shows up as emotional steadiness. You can name what you feel, ask for what you need and comfort yourself and others without fuss. You trust your instincts and your body’s signals.
When it is stressed
A stressed Moon can feel like moodiness, clinging, withdrawal or reacting before you have understood the feeling. Old habits of self-protection take over, such as retreating, overeating, over-caring or shutting down. These are usually old coping patterns, and they can soften as you notice them.
How to read it in your chart
- Sign: how you process feelings and what you find soothing. A Moon in Aries reacts quickly and recovers quickly; a Moon in Pisces absorbs the mood of the room.
- House: the area of life that feels like home emotionally, and where you need to feel secure.
- Aspects: connections to Venus, Mars or Saturn show how your needs sit alongside affection, drive or caution.
The Moon is also tied to your relationship with caregivers and childhood. Reading it kindly is often more useful than reading it critically.
