Planets
Saturn
Tropical zodiac, Western astrology
Saturn is the planet of structure, responsibility and time. It describes where you set limits, where you feel tested, and where you build slowly something that lasts. Often it feels like pressure or caution, but over time it becomes competence and self-respect.
Cycle and speed
Saturn takes about 29 years to circle the Sun, spending roughly two and a half years in each sign, and is retrograde for about four and a half months each year. Its first return to its natal position, around age 29 to 30, is a well-known turning point at which many people take stock of their commitments. Another comes near age 58 to 60.
Rulership
Saturn rules Capricorn, the sign of ambition and discipline. Traditionally it also rules Aquarius, which modern astrologers share with Uranus. Saturn is exalted in Libra, where structure serves fairness, and is traditionally weaker in Aries (its fall), where impatience resists its slow pace, and in Cancer and Leo (its detriment), where warmth and self-expression resist restriction.
When it is strong
A mature Saturn gives patience, reliability and clear boundaries. You can commit, plan ahead, accept responsibility without bitterness and stay calm when things are difficult. Its confidence is the kind earned by effort.
When it is stressed
Stressed Saturn can feel like fear of failure, harsh self-criticism, rigidity, isolation or a sense that nothing is ever enough. You might hold back from trying so that you cannot fall short. Learning to treat yourself as you would treat a student in progress can ease it.
How to read it in your chart
- Sign: your style of discipline. In Taurus it is steady; in Gemini it organises thinking.
- House: where you feel most responsible or tested, and where mastery comes with time.
- Aspects: connections to the Sun or Moon often show where self-doubt lives, and also where your durable strengths grow.
Saturn is less a punisher than a coach: demanding, but good at building.
