Neptune

Tropical zodiac, Western astrology

Neptune is the planet of imagination, compassion and the dissolving of boundaries. It describes where you dream, where you sense more than you can explain, and where you long for something beyond the ordinary. It brings inspiration and idealism, but it can also blur the line between vision and illusion.

Cycle and speed

Neptune takes about 165 years to orbit the Sun, spending roughly 14 years in each sign. Each year it is retrograde for about five months. Because it moves so slowly, its sign belongs to a whole generation, and its personal effect comes through the house and aspects. Nobody lives long enough to see it return to its natal place.

Rulership

Neptune is the modern ruler of Pisces, the sign of empathy, imagination and spirituality, which traditional astrology gave to Jupiter. There is no firm agreement about where Neptune is exalted or weak, so astrologers focus more on its house and aspects than on its dignities.

When it is strong

A clear Neptune shows up as creativity, empathy and spiritual openness. You can listen with your whole attention, imagine alternatives and give without needing to be asked. Art, music and quiet reflection nourish you.

When it is stressed

Strain can feel like confusion, escapism, over-idealising people or situations, avoiding hard facts or losing yourself in other people’s needs. Vagueness and disappointment often follow. Clear routines and honest checking of facts help, as does a trusted friend who tells you what they see.

How to read it in your chart

  • Sign: the dream and ideals of your generation.
  • House: where you are most imaginative and sensitive, and also where you may see things through rose-tinted glasses.
  • Aspects: Neptune softens whatever it touches. With the Sun it can blur identity; with Venus it idealises love; with Saturn it asks you to build your dreams.

Neptune asks you to hold inspiration and reality together.
