Key points
Black Moon Lilith
Tropical zodiac, Western astrology
Black Moon Lilith is a calculated point, not a body you could photograph. The Moon travels around the Earth on an oval path, so its distance changes. The place on that path where the Moon is farthest from us is called the apogee. Astrologers label that spot, or the empty focus of the oval, Black Moon Lilith, and mark it on the chart with a small moon-like glyph.
It should not be confused with the asteroid also named Lilith, which is a different object. The point takes roughly 8.85 years to circle the zodiac, so it spends around nine months in each sign.
The name
The name comes from a figure in old myth and folklore, a first woman who refused to submit and left. Astrologers borrowed the image as a symbol, not as a literal story, and you can read it that way whatever your gender.
What it tends to symbolize
Interpretations vary, but common themes include:
- raw instinct and desire that don't fit polite expectations
- the parts of yourself you have hidden, judged or been told to tone down
- fierce boundaries and the refusal to be controlled
- independence, and the cost of standing apart
If the Moon describes how you are nurtured and comforted, Lilith is often read as the shadow side of that: what you feel but don't show, or what you cannot bring yourself to compromise on.
This reading of Lilith is a modern one. The old books treat the apogee as astronomy only and give it no chart reading, and the older lore paints Lilith far darker than the image used today. In Natalora, Lilith is the mean apogee of the Moon.
How to use it
Look at the sign and house of Lilith, plus any close aspects to your planets. They suggest where you may feel misunderstood, intensely private, or unwilling to bend. Lilith can show openly, as pushing back, or stay hidden, as desire or anger you keep to yourself. A useful reflection is to ask what you have been suppressing that might deserve a healthier outlet.
Lilith is optional in many charts. In Natalora you can switch it on or off in the chart options.
