Key points

Part of Fortune and Vertex

Tropical zodiac, Western astrology

The Part of Fortune and the Vertex are calculated points, not bodies in the sky. You can use them on your own natal chart only, and they are off by default.

Part of Fortune (⊗)

It is worked out from the Ascendant, the Sun and the Moon, after checking whether your chart is a day chart or a night chart.

  • In a day chart, the Sun is above the horizon. Use Ascendant + Moon − Sun.
  • In a night chart, the Sun is below the horizon. Use Ascendant + Sun − Moon.

The result is one degree of the zodiac, and it lands in the same place whichever house system you choose. Old books link this point with overall wellbeing and the resources you have to work with. Modern astrologers often read it as the kind of activity that makes you feel like yourself and gives you energy. Look at its sign and house, and think about which activities in that area leave you feeling at ease.

Vertex (Vx)

The Vertex is the point in the western half of the chart where the prime vertical (the east-west line of the sky) crosses the ecliptic. It depends on the time and the latitude of your birth place, so only charts with a birth time have it.

Modern astrologers often read the Vertex as being about people and events that feel important to you when you meet them. Old books don't have this point, so treat it as an extra reading, not a rule.

Switching them on

  1. Open the "Chart settings" tab and tick the Part of Fortune or the Vertex in the list of points.
  2. If you don't know the birth time, you will see "Birth time required". The checkboxes stay, but the app doesn't show the points.
  3. Once on, both points appear in the positions table after the other optional points and before the four angles.

Both points form only conjunctions and oppositions with the planets, the Ascendant and the Midheaven, within an orb of 2 degrees. They don't count toward the dominants. The Part of Fortune has a sign and a house reading when you tap it; the Vertex doesn't have a long reading yet, and the app shows its position, with a link to this article.

To see this in your own chart, cast it in the app from your date, time and place of birth.
