Vesta

Tropical zodiac, Western astrology

Vesta is one of the largest bodies in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. It was found in 1807 and takes a little over three and a half years to travel once round the zodiac. In astrology Vesta describes devotion and focus: what you hold sacred enough to protect, in work and in love, the work you give your full attention to, and often the time alone that helps you recharge.

What Vesta describes

The name comes from the Roman goddess of the hearth, used here as a simple image of something looked after with care. Vesta is about concentration. It shows where you can lose track of time because a task has your whole attention, and what you guard from interruption. It also describes the quiet time you need to come back to yourself. Its challenge is balance: deep focus can crowd out closeness or rest, and Vesta may swing between all and nothing.

Vesta in a sign and a house

The sign of Vesta shows how you focus. In a fire sign your focus may come in short, intense bursts; in an earth sign it is slow and steady; in an air sign curiosity drives it; in a water sign it follows feeling and care. The house shows where your deepest focus goes and where you need time to yourself, such as study in the 9th house, home in the 4th or daily routines in the 6th.

Aspects

On its own Vesta is a soft note in the chart. A close aspect to a personal planet, such as the Sun, Moon or Mercury, or to the Ascendant or Midheaven (MC), makes it louder. A Vesta–Mars contact, for example, can bring single-minded drive, while a Vesta–Venus contact may show quiet devotion to the people and things you love. Natalora explains Vesta's major aspects to the ten planets, the Ascendant and the MC. Aspects to the other additional points are listed for reference, without interpretation.

How to use it

Notice what you are doing when you forget the clock. That is often Vesta's territory. Then ask two questions: does my focus go where I want it to go, and does it leave room for rest and for the people close to me? Use Vesta as a guide when you plan your time. Protect one block each week for the work you care about most, and one block for doing nothing at all. Reading asteroids is a modern practice that only some astrologers use, and Vesta's meaning is still being worked out.
